Peak hour restriction signs are up

Just a little note to let everyone know that the peak hour restriction signs have been put in place. There is one sign disallowing left hand turns from 7:30-9:30am weekdays onto South Normandy from Blanchard Road. The second sign is posted at Griswold Street and Sunset Road, restricting left turns onto Sunset from 4-6pm weekdays. These restrictions must apply to all vehicles, including residents.

Griswold/Sunset & Traffic Calming Update

Last week we received a letter updating us on the status of the Griswold-Sunset intersection as well as the traffic calming ideas for the neighborhood. As Juan stated during his last meeting with us on Oct. 23, 2007, the proposed intersection changes would not be performed. The are going to put peak hour restriction signs disallowing left hand turns from 7:30-9:30am weekdays onto South Normandy from Blanchard Road. Also there will be a peak hour restriction posted at Griswold Street and Sunset Road, restricting left turns onto Sunset from 4-6pm weekdays. These restrictions must apply to all vehicles, including residents. These restricted access signs should be in place shortly.

Griswold-Sunset Meeting Outcome

Hello Everyone,

Sorry it has taken so long to post a reply about the outcome of our meeting from Tuesday, Oct 23rd but here is a quick summary of what was discussed. The current marking on the pavement our out. Everyone in the neighborhood agreed that would not work out and he's going back to the drawing board. Also after the meeting he's going to check into the following:

  • Speed table(s) Hopefully we can get at least one in the neighborhood. Everyone that attending our meeting on Friday, Oct 19th agreed this would be a good solution for slowing down speed. Juan needs to check with several other departments to see if this is a viable option or not.
  • No left turn onto S. Normandy during morning rush hours.
  • Another option for the Griswold-Sunset intersection that’ll include a stop sign and turn it into a definite intersection. There is no chance for a 3 way stop at that intersection as Griswold just continues through.
  • Check into the possibility of adding a left hand turn signal for Griswold to turn onto Concord.
  • Relocation of the Dead End signs closer to Concord and making them more visible.
  • Replacing the existing children at play sign and adding more.

Juan also touched based on all of our suggestions from the letter Matt wrote up. He did say that a 3 way stop was out and that the city does not use speed bumps.

Matt and myself will be following up with Juan shortly to get a status update on what information, ideas and/or proposals he has come up with.

Eric

Last Night’s Meeting

First I would like to thank everyone who did make it out for last night’s meeting in the rain about the Intersection of Griswold and Sunset. We had between 20-25 people there throughout the evening and I think all agreed on most of the subjects brought up. Matt, Andrew, Ann and I are all going to work on putting a summary together and that will be sent out to everyone by tomorrow morning, so be on the lookout for that.

Our goal is to get a good summary of the neighborhood’s feelings on this intersection and speeding traffic that we can send to Juan Avendano, who is the Cambridge Traffic Calming Project Manager. We hope to send this summary out on Monday so he’ll be prepared for the meeting on Tuesday.

Thanks again to everyone who showed up!

Eric

Intersection of Griswold and Sunset

As some of you may have noticed there has been some paint sprayed on the pavement at the intersection of Griswold and Sunset. This is the City's proposed solutions to help calm traffic in our neighborhood and to help improve pedestrian safety. This work is supposed to start in the spring of 2008. If you have any interest and/or comments we invite you to a neighborhood meeting about the proposed work on Friday, Oct 19th at 6:15pm at the intersection.

This meeting will allow the neighborhood to get on the same page for when we meet with the city next week. After the meeting on Friday I’ll send out another message with a summary of what was covered. If you have anything to add or are unable to attend please email me with your comments or concerns at ewelin@muttdom.com
