Cambridge Climate Emergency Congress – invitation to participate

Mayor Simmons has issued an invitation to the public to participate in the Climate Emergency Congress scheduled for December 12 and January 23.  See her letter at http://www.cambridgema.gov/deptann.cfm?story_id=2420.  Interested people can sign up online.  Delegates to the congress will be selected. The deadline to sign up is this Friday, December 4th.

They are looking for 100 people to sign up for an innovative Climate Congress in December. In particular they are looking for Cambridge people who think the climate issues don’t concern them. This issue is really about public health and air quality, cost of energy, future of the planet, health of our children, good paying jobs and our responsibility to use nature’s resources responsively. These issues matter to us all.

Please pass this on freely to friends, people in your neighborhood, your work networks, your email networks and other places.

Follow-up on Climate Emergency Hearing

In May the Cambridge City Council passed a resolution recognizing that we are facing a climate emergency. On September 24, the Council held a special hearing on the emergency before a packed chamber. Scientists Melanie Fitzpatrick, Jill Stein, Frank Ackerman and John Sterman spoke on the latest climate findings, the health impacts of climate change, the economics of the emergency, and the urgent need for action. A summary of their presentations is at http://www.energytwodotzero.org/2009/09/26/scientists-speak-out-on-the-climate-emergency/

Now we need to urge the Councillors to take steps that can move the city toward more effective responses to the emergency. The Climate Awareness and Mobilization Working Group, which organized the September 24 hearing, is calling for a Mayor's climate emergency conference, drawing on all sectors of the city, to develop a new climate plan and concrete actions the city should take--a valuable opportunity to participate in city decision-making. Text of this proposal is posted at:

Please contact the Councillors to voice your support for a climate emergency conference and any other measures you believe can help us to fight climate change. This is the most critical issue we face. Let the Councillors know that we cannot afford business as usual - we urgently need to act!

You can send a single email to all of the Councillors at Council@CambridgeMA.GOV. The email addresses and phone numbers of each of the Councillors is at

City Council Hearing on Climate Change on Sept. 24th

HOW URGENT IS THE CLIMATE EMERGENCY?

  • WHAT SHOULD THE CITY DO?
  • WHAT SHOULD RESIDENTS DO?

Come & Hear Top Scientists at
Special Meeting of Cambridge City Council
Cambridge City Hall, 795 Mass. Avenue
September 24, 2009,   5:30 pm

On May 11, 2009, the City Council unanimously recognized that there is now a climate emergency and asked the City Manager to increase the City’s response to “a scale proportionate to the emergency.” This special meeting of the City Council is being held to determine how urgent it is for the City to increase its efforts to mitigate and prepare for this long-term emergency.

If you want Cambridge to be a leader in responding to the global emergency,

  • Come to the hearing on Sept. 24 to let the City Council know, and
  • Please forward this notice to friends.
