Cambridge Police warn of social networking, e-mail fraud

The following is a neighborhood alert from the Cambridge Police Department:

The Cambridge Police Department Electronic Crime Unit has recently seen an increase in the number of fraud incidents involving popular social networking Web sites (Facebook, MySpace) and e-mail accounts concerning a “friend” stating that they had been robbed in London. A suspect will gain control of a person’s account and instant message or e-mail that person’s contact list. This person will inform the victim that they had been robbed and are stranded overseas. The person then requests that money is wired to them via Western Union or MoneyGram. The Electronic Crime Unit is actively investigating reported incidents. Before sending money via wire, make sure you verify the identity of a friend who makes this request. Protect your own online account by routinely changing your passwords and using numbers, letters and symbols in your passwords.

Questions can be directed to the Cambridge Police Electronic Crime Unit at 617-349-9307

Reminder to lock your vehicles

A resident of Griswold Street passed note that someone had rifled through his car's glove box last Thursday or Friday when it was left unlocked in their driveway. It may be related to a recent incident that happened in Belmont:

Thieves continue to target unlocked vehicles
Tue Nov 24, 2009, 02:09 PM EST

Belmont, Mass. - Thieves broke into more than a dozen unlocked vehicles in one night last week, making off with thousands of dollars worth of stolen property ranging from power tools to electronics to spare change, according to police.

The culprits apparently struck the neighborhood of side streets between Concord Avenue and School Street across from Clay Pit Pond in the early morning hours of Nov. 20, according to police records. Police have so far received reports of 13 vehicles being broken into, with a price tag of more than $4,000 in missing property.

All the vehicles were reportedly parked in their owners’ driveways and left unlocked. The break-ins are believed to have been a coordinated effort, according to the police.

Police hunt for foot licker

Cambridge — Cambridge Police are on the lookout for a middle-aged foot licker with a penchant for accosting high-heeled shoppers outside a local organic food store.

An Arlington woman told police she was walking into Whole Foods at 200 Alewife Brook Parkway at about 4:15 p.m. Aug. 15 when a man stopped her at the entrance to the store.

“I like your shoes. I like high heels. I do shoes,” the foot fanatic allegedly told the woman.

“What, you wear them?” police said the woman reportedly responded.

“No, no I have a Web site,” the foot aficionado allegedly said.

The woman went into the store to shop and as she left the grocery store, the man appeared again and asked if he could take a photograph of her shoes.

That’s when the foot fetisher allegedly lowered himself to the ground and kissed and licked her right foot.

Police said the man then got up and walked away.

A message from our Neighborhood Sergeant

This particular information caught my eye and I wanted to relay it to the Highlands Community.  While there is no specific information that leads us to believe the Highlands is at risk, proper crime prevention and "target hardening" techniques should be followed.

In the past week there have been two housebreaks in the Strawberry Hill area, a neighborhood that had experienced no breaks yet in 2008. The first break, on Blanchard Rd. took place between 5.27.08 and 5.30.08. The SP(s) broke a window, reached into unlock the main lock, and then pried the deadbolt open. The residence was ransacked, but nothing was reported missing. The second break, on Grove St. took place between 14:00-15:00 on 6.2.08. Entry was gained through an unlocked door in the garage and over $5000 worth of digital cameras and camera equipment was taken.

If anyone has any questions, give me a call. Jim

Cambridge Police Alert Network

 Dear Cambridge Residents,

I am pleased to announce that starting today, April 1, 2008, the Cambridge Police Department will be presenting Cambridge residents with the opportunity to register with the Alert Network.  This is an innovative service being used across the country that has the capability of sending important messages to residents via electronic text messaging and e-mails. We will be utilizing this system to send out community alerts, information on community safety, Police Department sponsored meetings, and news updates relative to the Cambridge Police Department.

Effective May 1, 2008, community alerts will no longer be sent out via the previous distribution lists.  Residents that are already receiving community alerts via email from myself or other Police Department personnel will need to register with the Alert Network to continue receiving these notices.

To register for the Alert Network, visit our website at http://www.cambridgepolice.org/ and click the link for the Alert Network Registration.

Under the "For Citizens" Column, select the "sign up for alerts" tab.  You can then simply follow the quick and easy instructions to complete your registration.  You will have a choice to receive notices relevant to just your specified neighborhood or all of Cambridge. You can even sign up for Boston alerts, which will come from their police department.

Please remember that if you opt to receive electronic text messages via your mobile phone, standard message rates of your service carrier will apply.

Please feel free to contact the Community Relations Unit at 617-349-3236, for questions about this new service, or assistance with your registration.

Take care,

From Cambridge DPW – Posting Ordinance

Dear Cambridge Neighborhood Groups:

As a follow up to some questions we've received, I am sending this reminder to all neighborhood organizations that posting of notices on public facilities- like street poles, trees, bus shelters, street lights, newboxes, mailboxes, utility boxes, street signs, etc.-is not permitted in Cambridge (per the attached ordinance).  Notices may only be posted in designated public areas, or on private property with the owner's permission.

Postings do require City staff to spend a great deal of time scraping and repainting public furnishings, and often results in damages that cannot be easily repaired. Please advise your membership, employees, or private contractors to avoid this practice, as it can result in citations and fines.

We truly appreciate your help in addressing this issue.  If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact Compliance Officer Vincent Best at 617-349-4869/ vbest@cambridgema.gov.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Fuentes
Community Relations Manager
Department of Public Works
City of Cambridge
