West Nile Virus Confirmed in Cambridge Mosquitoes

State health officials reported on Aug. 19 that mosquitoes in Cambridge had tested positive for West Nile virus. Two positive mosquito samples were collected from traps located near Danehy Park and in the Cambridgeport neighborhood. This is the first time since 2007 that mosquitoes carrying the virus have been discovered in Cambridge.

West Nile virus is an insect-borne disease that is transmitted to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. Most human infections are so mild that the vast majority of people mistake their symptoms for flu or a cold. Less than one percent of infected people develop life-threatening conditions like meningitis or encephalitis. People over 50 are at greatest risk for serious illness.

“The discovery of West Nile virus in Cambridge mosquitoes is not surprising,” said Sam Lipson, the director of environmental health for the Cambridge Public Health Department, noting that infected mosquitoes had also been found in Arlington, Brookline, Boston, Medford, and other communities in Greater Boston.
