Plans to redevelop a Fresh Pond Parkway site where a landmark fish market once stood have been put on hold.
In 2008, it was reported that the West Cambridge lot at 355 Fresh Pond Parkway – once home to Fresh Pond Seafood – would be redeveloped into a two-story retail complex, but since then all that remains is vacant land with a large “for lease” sign.
“We are a parking lot at the moment,” said Roberta Sydney, whose Brookline-based real estate development firm, Sydney Associates, paid $3.3 million for the property in 2007. “Given the recent economic forces, we had to put things on hold.”
Sydney said they have received “letters of intent” from interested tenants, but nothing has been set in stone as of late.
“It’s been very difficult,” she said. “But its been much more positive lately. We are looking to get going.”
Original plans the site call for 19,400 square feet of retail space with 45 parking spaces. Fresh Pond Seafoodn closed for good in December 2006.
Possible businesses for the proposed neighborhood retail development include a coffee shop, take-out restaurant, and a mailbox center.
