Belmont Residents Are Invited to
Climate Action Rally on Saturday, April 14
On April 14, Belmont residents concerned about climate change can take part in a local event to urge Congress to reduce carbon emissions 80% by 2050. Sustainable Belmont, a subcommittee of Belmont Vision 21 Implementation Committee, is organizing a Belmont contingent to join a patriotic rally that will be held in Lexington from noon to 2 p.m. Meet at the Belmont Public Library, 336 Concord Ave., at 11 a.m. to ride bikes together or 11:30 a.m. to carpool. The rally is part of Step It Up, a nationwide day of citizens focusing on global warming. More than 1250 events are planned across the country to urge Congress to take action now to reduce the heat-trapping gases that contribute to climate change.
The Belmont/Lexington family-friendly event will take place at Hastings Park, located on the corner of Mass Avenue and Worthen Road in Lexington. Speakers will include U.S Representative Ed Markey, Representative Will Brownsberger, Senator Robert Havern, Representative Jim Marzilli, and Executive Director of the Massachusetts Climate Action Network Marc Breslow. Live music will be provided by Blue Moose and the Unbuttoned Zippers, a Swedish and Old Time Appalachian folk group that merges contemporary musical elements with traditional folk music.
